Once upon a time, two cult whistleblowers, an audio wiz from Tulsa and a community chaplain (me) built a show from scratch and grew it to 25+ Million downloads. We secured media placements in major news outlets, ran a weekly talk show, made merch, and got name dropped on Netflix shows. All while casually kicking the doors down on the shame and secrecy that help coercive abuse run rampant in our culty, culty world.
How it started: In the summer of 2020, I was glued to the HBO docuseries ‘The Vow’. When I ran out of episodes I had a crazy idea, and promptly tracked down the lead whistleblowers from the show to pitch them a podcast concept, title, logline, and 12-episode series arc.
How it's going: 200+ episodes and 25+ million downloads later, that crazy idea seems to have caught on. Each week Sarah Edmondson and Anthony “Nippy” Ames have unfiltered conversations with fellow cult survivors and a range of experts on the dynamics of coercive control, manipulation, and mass delusion.
We’ve been a Top 100 Society & Culture podcast on Apple many weeks since early 2021, an editor’s pick on Spotify multiple times, and have been featured in Vogue, ELLE Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Entertainment Weekly. We’ve also gotten glowing reviews in The New Yorker and LA Review of Books, while getting hate mail from NXIVM die-hards. (They still exist!) We played SXSW in 2022, were featured on Season 2 of ‘The Vow’, and have welcomed guests like Eckhart Tolle, Evan Rachel Wood, and Leah Remini.
This has been a true gumbo of chops-sharpening experiences and a perfect container for both my professional skills in creative work, and my personal passion for practicing radical listening as a form of community care.
